Bishop Mullen's Reflections on the Churchwide Assembly
Posted by: Admin on Aug 27, 2005 - 06:42 PM
Church News Dear Sister and Brothers in Christ:

The 9th Biennial Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA is now history. The decisions affirmed by over one thousand voting members meeting in Orlando will be a part of our work and responsibility into the future.

If you haven’t already done so, please go to the ELCA website for news reports on Assembly actions. (There is a link on our website to the ELCA website. Or you can go to directly to the ELCA website at www.elca.org. ) Printed materials on Churchwide Assembly actions will be sent soon and a future issue of The Lutheran magazine will feature an Assembly report.
Among the actions taken:

* Approved Interim Eucharistic sharing with the United Methodist Church, a church that has much to offer us in living with diversity and which we have much to offer in shaping life around confessional theology.
* Approved mission strategies for people of African descent and for ethnic groups within the Arab and Middle Eastern communities.
* Adopted a churchwide campaign called “Peace Without Walls: Stand for Justice in the Holy Land”. Included in that campaign are communion vessels crafted in Palestine to be used in the 65 synods of the ELCA.
* Adopted the proposed changes to the churchwide administrative and governance structures.
* Approved the “Renewing Worship” process with final materials to be approved by the Church Council.
* An affirmative vote to make ending world hunger a core conviction of this church.

And of course, we spent much time on the three recommendations sent to the Assembly by the ELCA Church Council in response to the recommendations of the ELCA Task Force on Sexuality.

Before voting on the three recommendations the Assembly spent an hour in a “quasi committee of the whole” sharing thoughts, beliefs, and feelings regarding the issue of homosexuality and the possibility of ordaining people in committed same-gender relationships. Much of what we heard during that hour we have heard many times at Sierra Pacific Synod Assemblies over the last decade and a half.
