Our church council, along with the outreach team, have been mulling over an idea called "Second Mile Giving". Pastor Anne has talked about and modeled "Sacrificial Giving". This new idea of Second Mile Giving carries this concept a bit further and also makes our opportunities to support outside ministries more concrete.
Starting in July, the plan is to have a "Mission Bucket" and a set focus for those extra dollars, with the recipient spelled out. We will even have an opportunity to walk up each week and offer what we can, over and above our regular church offerings, to these particular ministries. Each ministry will be highlighted for 2-3 months. The ministries chosen for this are: Second Harvest, Mt. Cross/Help One Child, Loaves and Fishes, Rebuilding Together, and ELCA World Hunger. Each of these ministries, excepting ELCA World Hunger, are local. We are familiar with Second Harvest and Mt. Cross. Help One Child is a local effort to promote foster parent ship through recruitment and support of families within a church setting. (Mt. Cross provides a family retreat for Help One Child families which is why we put those two ministries together). Loaves and Fishes is a local food pantry, and Rebuilding Together strives to assist poor families in the San Jose area with urgent home repairs.
As part of this program, we will be inviting representatives of these ministries to participate in our worship services and tell us about their various ministries, so we have a better idea of what it is we would be
supporting. We are excited about this opportunity to reach out into the community! Much as our volunteering at Second Harvest helped energize us to support Second Harvest, Second Mile Giving would help us make deeper connections within the community.
